I was recently heading into southeastern Washington, to Pullman, a small State University town. After leaving lush western Washington, you soon learn how dry our state is with the arid hills of central Washington. A right turn after the bridge at Vantage sends you down the road into a crazy combination of huge rolling hills, winding highways and roads as straight as a stalk of alfalfa.
The distance from Vantage to Pullman is about 2 hours on a good traveling day. During my travels I passed by fields and fields of green. Something green. It’s got to be broccoli! Of course! With that question answered and several more miles behind me I start approaching my favorite landscape, the rolling hills of the Palouse.
I can’t ever get enough of the colors of the Palouse. The southeastern corner of Washington is almost perpetually sunny all year round so the colors in this part of the state are intensified by the sun. The combinations of natural colors are wonderful! The various shades of green contrasting with the oceans of sky above are so brilliant. Then I pass distant fields of yellow, bright clear yellow. That becomes a part of the incredible pallet of colors of the Palouse.
As I drive further, I notice that some of the crops have been cut, leaving the rolling hills with a perfectly trimmed buzz-cut. Not a blade out of place, nor wasted. Even further along, the rich soil of the Palouse has been turned, creating a whole new shade of brown for me and another interesting texture. There are so many rich natural colors!
I know that if I were to stop along the highway to try and capture these scenes on my camera, I would loose that memory of the intensity and brilliance of these summer colors. There is no capturing the feel. Instead I choose to hold them all in my mind, savoring them each time I think of the Palouse.
I can’t wait to go back. The fall will bring more crop rotation, which in turn will bring new seasonal colors and new memories of the richness of the Palouse.
Bring these colors indoors and use them generously. Enjoy the summer and all the colors it brings!
Oh, and after all, it was a field of lentils! Not broccoli.
Best to all, Ruth “:O)
Our summer was so mild this year… unlike the last two or three summers. I don’t think anyone is quite ready to for a Northwest winter yet. During this transition time there are so many fabulous organic colors outside. My office window looks upon a brilliant red Japanese maple, and so many other colors such as buttery yellow, kelly green, muted orange and a variety of others.
This is such a great time to consider bringing color into your home. If you’re hestitant, consider a soft palette of browns, greens or golds. The deep, rich colors are wonderful for some people but not all. The color in your room should enhance your space not be the focal point. This fall create a fresh new feel in your home by just adding a little color. Some color suggestions tomorrow!

I’m really curious to know who has actually held a garage sale and netted at least $10/hr for all their time and efforts. My experience in the past with garage sales has been bleek. After rummaging through the house for all the unwanted, unneeded or outdated items, pricing everything, advertising, setting all the items out in the driveway or yard, then spending a couple long days trying to convince someone that they really need your unwanted stuff, how do the profits look? Not to mention that sales usually take place on FRIDAY and Saturday, and you’ve more than likely decided to take a long weekend away from work!
What do you think…is it worth it? If you are downsizing or doing some late spring cleaning there are many other alternatives to garage sales and we’ll explore the various avenues this week.
Stay tuned. “:O) Ruth
